Join our immersive, practice-led curatorial intensive designed for emerging curators, artists, writers, and cultural practitioners interested in contemporary Southeast Asian art.

Across four focused sessions, participants will explore curatorial research, methodologies, exhibition-making, public programming, and arts writing. You will learn to develop concepts and ideas into a project that resonates with your local community and beyond. By the end of the course, you will produce a curatorial project proposal and presentation and receive professional feedback from guest curators from Southeast Asia.

This course provides foundational skills in curatorial research, writing, and management. It is designed for students, independent arts workers and industry professionals. Limited spots are available.

This is a live online course held via Zoom. You will receive an access link following registration.

Course Outline

This course is delivered online with 2-hour weekly sessions across four weeks in March. The final session (26 March) is scheduled for 3 hours to accommodate presentation time and guest curators’ feedback.

Session #1: Curatorial research and ideation

  • Introductory lecture: What is Contemporary Southeast Asian Art?

  • Workshop activity: Visual mapping of contemporary SE Asian artworks and artists

  • Lecture #2: What is curating and how to start

  • Workshop activity: Start your own curatorial project proposal (template provided)

  • Class reflections

Session #2: Curatorial methodologies, exhibition-making and public programming

  • Introductory lecture: Rethinking space and curatorial methodologies – Learn about the different “spaces” that art can be exhibited, shared and experienced, and its corresponding methodologies.

  • Workshop activity #1: What makes an exhibition? From concept to realisation

  • Workshop activity #2: Art Publics – designing meaningful public programs

  • Class reflections

Session #3: Writing and refining your curatorial proposal

  • Introductory lecture: What is curatorial writing? Explore different arts writing in the industry, including curatorial texts/briefs, grant writing, artwork labels, editorial texts, and more

  • Workshop activity #: Collective writing session – how to write impactful curatorial texts

  • One-on-one consultation/mentorship session with instructor

Session #4: Presentation to guest curatorial panel

  • Individual presentations of your curatorial project proposal to guest curators from Southeast Asia

  • Group reflection and feedback

About the Instructor:

Bianca Winataputri is a curator, writer, researcher, and podcast host based in Indonesia and Australia. She has a Ph.D. in Art History and Theory from Monash Art, Design, and Architecture (MADA). Her research and teaching focus on contemporary Southeast Asian art and exhibitions from the 1990s to the present.

Bianca previously served as the Public Programs Coordinator at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) and Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Australia, where she was part of a curatorium for the major exhibition Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia.

She was also recently International Researcher in Residence at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul, South Korea in 2024. Her recent projects include Talking Contemporary podcast launched in 2021, Sang GunungMenyerahkan Jejaknya ke Laut exhibition at Cush Cush Gallery, Bali, in 2023, and Who am I: Chinese-Indonesian Art Practice Post-1998 exhibition at MADA Intermission Gallery, Melbourne, in 2019.

Bianca’s curatorial projects have been supported by the Australian Council for the Arts (now Creative Australia), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Goethe Institute, Artlink Australia, and more.
